CHAPTER FOURTEEN

1983-1988

Michael’s problems with Ross became much more critical. Ross was advising clients with no collaboration from Michael or even Gail. Michael now believed this short partnership needed to end. Michael and Gail devised a plan where they would go into partnership without him.

Michael would tell Ross that he was thinking about retiring, because he had his fill of the industry. Gail would come in with $15,000 from her mother, enough to float the office for at least two months. She would secure new office space and change the name of the company and file for a new corporation. They would deal with the unions and the city after they were in the office operating. At the end of the week, the clients would be told of the move. Michael remained in the office working with Ross while Gail was out doing all the elements of starting a new office. They would meet in their favorite Thai restaurant every night.

The startup took ten days before they were ready to go. Michael and Gail spoke to all the clients over the weekend and informed the clients that they do not owe commissions to anyone since Michael's name was on their contract with the old agency. They would move their employment contracts to their new agency, and all of clients approved of this action. On Monday morning, Ross sat in the empty office not yet knowing what happened. Ross started to call clients who informed him that they were with the new agency. Confused, he called around to verify this news, only to discover he had no clients. But he did have an office since his name was on the lease as well as Michael’s.

Ross’s father called Michael and did not have fond words for Michael’s actions. There was nothing that Ross could do. He was checkmated. Michael and Gail were on a quest to build a strong and influential agency. Michael did feel bad for Ross, but all Michael wanted to do was to service his clients with passion and truth, developing their career even if the payoff took a while.

It seemed many people in the industry supported their move. They began drawing a small salary three weeks after opening. Michael was able to get the license from the city and the franchises from the two unions SAG and AEA. They hired an assistant for the office. She was great, but left after four weeks because she had problems with Gail. The second new assistant was male and a true “Yes” man.

Michael and Gail were simply fine now. Michael was also garnishing a reputation in the industry for having an incredible eye for talent, as demonstrated in a growing list of new actors and hot clients.

Michael and Gail represented a great actor who just landed the replacement for the lead in a major Broadway show. During rehearsals, the actor became extremely sick and developed pneumonia. Michael was told he was HIV positive and developed several conditions related to AIDS. He was also contracted to do a small but nice role in a film.
